Does your browser support MathML? MathML is the Mathematical Markup Language recommended by the W3C. It allows you to display neat formulas such as $E=m{c}^2$, which should show up simlar to E=mc², if your browser supports MathML. By the way, W3C's example browser Amaya is still the best browser and authoring tool when it comes to standard conformance.
